Rehearsals: Monday nights 7.00-9.00pm
The GK’s Explorer Band is our intermediate ensemble for people who can read music and have some experience playing in a group setting. Members will build foundation skills, develop more independence in their playing and learn how to be part of a large ensemble. Explorer Band learns and performs a range of musical styles – including Broadway and film music, jazz, swing, classical music and pop tunes – at the GK’s regular concerts and other community events. Members also have the opportunity to combine with Concert Band members for tours, competitions and other performances. |
Is Explorer Band right for me? If you have at least one year of experience playing your instrument and some experience sight reading music, Explorer Band could be a good fit for you. We also welcome people who are interested in learning a second instrument. As a guide, instrumental parts range from the equivalent of AMEB grades 2—5. Many members have never done grades, so the best way to find out which group is suitable is to come along, bring your instrument, and sit in! | Which instruments can I play? Explorer Band is a wind ensemble made up of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments, including: Woodwind - Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinets (Bb Soprano and Bass Clarinet), Saxophones (Alto, Tenor, Baritone). Brass - Bb Trumpets, French Horns, Euphonium (aka Baritone Horn), Trombones (inc. Bass), Tuba Percussion - Drum Kit, Bass Guitar, as well as a variety of pitched and unpitched ‘orchestral percussion’ instruments including: Glockenspiel, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymbals, Triangle, Timpani, ‘toys’ (e.g. Cabassa, Woodblocks etc). |
